Wine Story

  • Terroir

For this wine, the Monks have selected parcels in the cool mountainous air, which balances the heat of the full Provençal sun to yield the most intense flavor possible.

  • Vineyard

Via Caritatis' philosophy is to let nature, through their vines as well as other products in Provence, produce its fruits in its own timing, today and tomorrow. This is made possible by the perfect microclimate and famous Mistral that help keep the air clean and healthy. The yields are closely monitored according to the different terroirs, vine types, graft carrier, age and density of the plants.

  • Vinification

After harvesting perfectly healthy and mature grapes, the pressing is done directly at low pressure, using a cold fermentation of all the must. The vinification process is done in concrete tanks at low temperatures, and the must is aged on thin layer of lees with batonnage-style stirring over a period of 6 months.

Via Caritatis

A 700-year-old tradition of excellence

In 1309, in the foothills of Mont Ventoux, France, in the Southern Rhône, Pope Clement V planted the very first papal vineyard – now known as Via Caritatis. But what began then was so much more than a vineyard—it was a vision of winemaking motivated by a spirit of charity. Today, more than 700 years later, that spirit of charity characterized by mutual service, generosity, and sharing, guides our community of monks and nuns from the Benedictine Abbey of Le Barroux in their winemaking.
