Odinstal

Weingut (winery) Odinstal, a biodynamic grand cru monopole in the Pfalz, was revitalized in 1998 when Thomas and Ute Hensel acquired the estate, drawn to its unique volcanic terroir and high-altitude vineyards that produce distinctive, terroir-driven wines under the guidance of master enologist Andreas Schumann.

History

Reviving Odinstal

Driven by a vision to showcase the exceptional terroir of the Pfalz's highest vineyards, Thomas and Ute Hensel purchased Odinstal in 1998, recognizing its potential to produce world-class wines. In 2004, they brought on Andreas Schumann, a Geisenheim-trained enologist and biodynamic expert, who had honed his skills under Martin Franzen at Müller-Catoir. Schumann's expertise in biodynamic practices and minimal intervention winemaking has been instrumental in elevating Odinstal's wines, allowing them to fully express the unique volcanic soils and high-altitude climate of this grand cru monopole site.

The Vision

Purity of Place, Harmony with Nature

At Odinstal, the pursuit of terroir expression is paramount. Andreas Schumann and his team employ a delicate balance of tradition and innovation to craft wines that authentically reflect their unique soil types. The winery's higher altitude allows for later harvesting while maintaining lower alcohol levels, contributing to wines of finesse and precision. Whole-cluster fermentations and experimentation with various vessels, from steel tanks to amphorae, enable the team to further refine their expression of Odinstal's singular terroir. This commitment to purity and minimal intervention results in wines that are both buttoned-up and wild, embodying the essence of their volcanic origins.

The Wines

Volcanic Expressions: Odinstal's Terroir-Driven Gems

We are proud to showcase Odinstal's exceptional wines, each a testament to the winery's commitment to biodynamic practices and terroir expression. The Pfalz Odinstal Weissburgunder 350 N.N 2019 offers a texture akin to merino wool, evolving gracefully with age. Our Pfalz Odinstal Riesling 120 N.N. 2020 presents a masterful blend of soils, delivering smoky notes with succulent fruits and a zingy finish. The Pfalz Odinstal 'Nakt' Silvaner 2020, bottled without sulfur, is a soulful and slightly volatile expression of this often-overlooked variety. Odinstal's wines beautifully reflect their volcanic origins, offering a unique perspective on Pfalz winemaking that emphasizes nuance, texture, and mineral complexity over overt fruitiness.
