Rosé Wine
The Essence of Rosé Wines
Rosé is a vibrant category of pink wines crafted from red grapes, not a specific grape variety. With hues from pale salmon to deep fuchsia, rosés offer a diverse range of flavors and styles. Popular in regions like Provence, Spain, Italy, and California, rosés can be dry or sweet, light and crisp or rich and bold. This versatility has sparked a global surge in popularity among wine enthusiasts.
Rosé Wine Production
Rosé is crafted through limited skin contact between red grape skins and juice, typically lasting a few hours to a couple of days. This brief maceration imparts the wine's distinctive pink hue and subtle red fruit flavors. Most rosés are fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks, preserving their fresh aromas and flavors. Unlike many white and red wines, rosés rarely undergo lees stirring, malolactic fermentation, or oak aging, resulting in wines meant to be enjoyed young and fresh.
Exploring Rosé Styles and Pairings
Rosé wines come in four main styles:
- Light: Pale pink, dry, and crisp with citrus, strawberry, and mineral notes.
- Medium: Salmon-colored with cherry and raspberry flavors, plus floral and spice hints.
- Fuller: Darker pink with rich berry flavors and peppery notes.
- Sweet: Often labeled as "White" followed by the grape variety, like White Zinfandel.
Serve rosés chilled, between 50°F to 60°F, to enhance their refreshing qualities. Their versatility makes them perfect for pairing with a wide range of cuisines, from light salads and seafood to grilled meats. Whether it's a casual picnic or a sophisticated dinner, there's a rosé to complement every occasion and palate.
